ICT for all: empowering people to cross the digital divide

The World Telecommunication Day (WTD) is a prestigious event which, following many year’s tradition, is organized by the Association of Polish Electrical Engineers in co-operation with the Ministry of Infrastructure. The International Telecommunication Union based in Geneva has chosen as this year’s celebrations theme: ICT for all: empowering people to cross the digital divide.

 

The first day of the celebrations of WTD in Poland, that is to say 16 May 2002 will focus on the presentation of matters relating to the information society building up. Two parallel events will take place: the 3rd Round Table Conference named “Poland towards the Information Society” and FORUM of business applications of Information and Communication Technology (telecommunications, informatics, media, Internet).

 

The 3rd Round Table Conference named “Poland towards the Information Society” chaired by Mr. Marek Pol - Minister of Infrastructure, Vice Prime Minister, will take place in the Polish Parliament premises under the patronage of Mr. Marek Borowski - Speaker of the Parliament. It will assume the role of a platform for the exchange of ideas and will be a place of meeting of opinion making milieus - politicians, scientists and business representatives from largest companies and media interested in the development of the Information Society in Poland. Participation of politicians is forecasted (MPs, government officials, local government officials) but also of scientific, economical and media milieus. The FORUM of business applications of Information and Communication Technology (telecommunications, informatics, media, Internet) which is destined mainly for SMEs (Small & Medium Sized Enterprises) will be organized in co-operation with the Ministry of Economy and the Ministry of Infrastructure.

 

On the 17th of May 2002 the Official Session of WTD will take place. Traditionally, government officials, MPs, science and business representatives, representatives of companies associated with telecommunications, informatics and ICT and media representatives will take part in the session. After the session a Discussion Panel named: ICT - today and tomorrow. The Technology - the Market - the Society and in parallel a Seminar: Application of ICT in medicine will take place.

 

Both on 16 and 17 May an exhibition will accompany the celebrations and the conferences in the Polish Army Conference and Exhibition Centre. The exhibition will include the presentation of offers of ICT equipment and software producers that are integrating the achievements from telecommunications, informatics and media technology. A Diploma of the Minister of Infrastructure and the President of SEP will be awarded to the exhibitor whose product, technical solution or service presented during the exhibition will or can have the most prominent influence on the building up of the Information Society in Poland. The celebrations of the World Telecommunication Day are under the auspices (patronage) of the President of the Republic of Poland - Mr. Aleksander Kwaśniewski.

 

The Organization Committee was endeavouring to enrich the WTD celebrations through presentation of chosen new technological solutions, contracts and agreements that can have an essential importance for the development or for the spread of applications of Polish telecommunications, particularly in fields relating to the theme of this year’s celebrations. As an example of such initiative can be given the planed signing during the Round Table Conference “Poland towards the Information Society” of an agreement (initiated by TP SA) concerning the co-operation for the Information Society. Simultaneously, in regards to the central celebrations of WTD in Warsaw, in many major towns in the entire country, accompanying events relating to the theme of WTD will be organized.

 

By the evening of 17 May 2002 in Villa Foksal’s gardens a traditional cocktail-party: Evening Meeting with ICT will be organized. Few hundreds gests - politicians, telecommunications and media milieus’ representatives will take part to the event.

 

The WTD celebrations elicit and are eliciting also this time huge interest from the media. The media patronage was accorded to the WTD celebrations by the Polish Television, the Polish Radio and the Virtual Poland; and the press patronage by: Puls Biznesu, Trybuna, Elektronizacja, Przegląd Telekomunikacyjny+Wiadomości Telekomunikacyjne and Spektrum - Magazyn Informacyjny SEP. Twoja Komórka, TeleKomBiznes and Przegląd Techniczny have become press partners.
